Director of Engineering, Fulfillment Optimization

About the role

Coupang is looking for a Director of Engineering to lead its Fulfillment Optimization (FO) organization globally, covering Seoul and India. The FO platform decides how every order is planned, distributed and fulfilled, and sits on the critical path of purchases across Korea and Taiwan. The role combines ownership of production-critical Tier-1 systems with the leadership needed to build, scale and retain a high-performing engineering team.

Key responsibilities

• Lead architecture design of FO systems for scale, extensibility and reliability, covering order planning, fulfillment optimization, inventory allocation and network cost management.
• Define the technology roadmap and align stakeholders on how business objectives such as PDD rationalization, CFCC consolidation and multi-market expansion become technical plans.
• Remove organizational blockers and drive cross-team alignment across FO, Promise, WMS, Supply Chain and Operations teams.
• Own the architecture, development, testing, deployment and delivery of large-scale global software powering fulfillment optimization.
• Drive reliability of Tier-1 services: circuit breakers, graceful degradation, observability, capacity planning and incident prevention for systems with strict P99 latency SLAs.
• Run high-quality design reviews on distributed systems involving gRPC service meshes, Kafka event pipelines, CPLEX optimization solvers and multi-layer caching.
• Build, mentor and retain a team across Seoul and India, hiring senior engineers and managers and shaping engineering culture.

Required profile

• 10+ years in engineering teams in a fast-moving environment, and 10+ years developing and operating backend services and web applications.
• 7+ years architecting and designing systems, and 5+ years leading engineering teams, including manager-of-managers experience.
• Proven track record delivering complex, highly available distributed systems with sub-100ms P99 latency and 99.95%+ availability.

• JVM backend systems (Java, Kotlin)
• Kafka at scale, event-driven architectures and event sourcing
• System design: API design, domain and data modeling, caching (Redis, in-memory, S3-backed), gRPC and REST
• Incident management, observability and capacity planning
