Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer – Search & Discovery

About the role

The Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer will lead the design, development, and evolution of Coupang's end‑to‑end recommendation systems. This role places AI/ML innovation at the core of recommendation quality, covering ranking, retrieval, and relevance models while scaling robust systems that power millions of daily customer interactions.

Key responsibilities

• Own the Recommendation service, a critical component for delivering a wow experience to customers.
• Collaborate with global cross‑functional teams to co‑build a world‑class recommendation system.
• Mine large volumes of data to extract insights on customer behavior.
• Develop new ML models and features to create or improve recommendation algorithms.
• Create data pipelines, train models, run experiments, and launch validated models.
• Mentor and grow engineers across teams.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or a related field.
• Proven ability to derive actionable insights from complex datasets and solve business‑critical problems using advanced AI/ML technologies.
• Demonstrated experience as a technical leader driving cross‑functional collaboration on large‑scale solutions.
• 8+ years of professional experience in applied AI/ML with large, complex datasets.
• Fast‑paced self‑learner with a track record of launching successful algorithms that drive measurable business impact.
• Professional proficiency in Python and/or Java.
• Excellent communication skills in English.
